ABOUT
Hey! I’m Eugene Tham, a Malaysian-born Chinese. I grew up in Johor and later moved to Kuala Lumpur to study and work as a graphic designer.
I've always been a visually driven person, ever since I was young, and I knew I wanted to be a visual artist or designer of some sort very early in my life. I wasn't the smartest student in school; I got an average score on most subjects, but there were two that I excelled in (and, well, you guessed it), one of them was the arts! (the other one was maths, but that's just because I'm Asian) Although my dad didn't work in the art industry, he had a good sense of art and would always teach me how to draw before an art exam. It was also part of the reason why art is so special to me.
Drawing was a big part of my childhood. Growing up, I wasn't the best at articulating my thoughts with words, but drawing gave me the freedom to express myself. (I even made some great friends with drawing as well!) A weird little thing that I did when I was a kid is that, every time my parents refused to get me the toy that I wanted, I would spend the whole day drawing it, and it would make me very happy just by looking at it as if I had somehow 'created' the toy. (weird, I know)
After high school, my parents have been very supportive of my passion. They gave me the chance to study in one of the top art colleges in Malaysia, The One Academy. That was when I got exposed to different types of art and design, and had a deeper understanding of the art industry. I eventually chose to major in advertising and graphic design.
As I have explored the world of design over the years, many art forms have piqued my interest. Photography, cinematography, illustration, and 3D art each have their way of telling a story. As a person who expresses thoughts visually, they are like a new language that can translate different ideas. I have since set a goal for myself to improve at each creative medium, so that my creativity is no longer limited by my technical capabilities, and even better, if I can help others along the way.
